Hundreds take first step on route to employment
Over 130 people attended the first Pembrokeshire Workways+ jobs fair with over 30 employers and training providers under one roof.
The event was organised through the EU-funded Workways+ project and was held at The Bridge Innovation Centre in Pembroke Dock (Thursday 18th May).
Attended by employers from a wide range of sectors, those looking for work were invited to come along and speak directly to employers about a whole variety of roles. To name but a few, there were vacancies in construction (Wilmott Dixon, WRW Construction), Care (Park House Court, Pembrokeshire Care, Elliots Hill & Allied Health Care) retail (Tesco, B&M’s & Avon); hospitality (Bluestone Holiday Village), and manufacturing (Capestone Organic). Tesco, B&M and Bluestone were amongst the household names with exciting jobs opportunities on offer.
Simon Rosser, Store Manager of B&M, Pembroke Dock said ''We had a very productive day and had lots of interest, now the interviewing starts''
Open from 10am to 2pm, 138 people came through the doors, of which many were queuing at the doors waiting for the event to open.
Workshops were held throughout the day, including ‘What employers want’ hosted by Pembrokeshire College Employment Bureau, ‘Business start-up & self-employment Workshop’, hosted by Business Wales and ‘Careers in care’ with Park House Court.
Co-ordinated by Workways+, staff were on hand to introduce participants to potential employers and assist with completing application forms on the day.
Workways+ is backed by £7.5m of EU funds through the Welsh Government. The project is led by Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council in collaboration with Swansea, Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion Councils.
Eleanor Brick, Pembrokeshire County Council Quality and Performance Manager for Workways + said “I’m so glad that the event was productive for both the people attending, the employers and the training and support providers. The feedback has been excellent and we will look to hold similar events in the future.’’
If you were unable to attend on Thursday, Workways+ runs outreach sessions across Pembrokeshire, contact Workways+ on 01437 776609 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange a one to one session with an employment mentor.
